Maybe it's time to say it: "XHS (RedNote) is not an accurate depiction of China/Chinese people. Its denizens never claimed it was."

This app is NOT a replacement for our American apps. It was not made for us. So...

  • No, you will not learn "the truth" about China and the Chinese from it, just as you will not learn the truth about American politics from Fox or CNN
  • No, you will not beat the system into submission by purposefully posting things to get yourself banned (you may, however, get all of is kicked off the app, if enough of you wish that for us out of spite or childishness)
  • No, the Chinese people on XHS are not deliberately lying to you about what their lives are like in China; judging ALL nearly 1.5 BILLION Chinese on just ~100 posts you've seen on XHS is like judging all Americans by watching how our celebrities behave
  • Yes, some people are much, much better off than others in China; some have wonderful apartments in a city like Shanghai and some live in poverty in the derelict villages of a province like Guizhou
    • When in doubt about this... look to yourself: Can you not think of something comparable in the US? For example: those who live in New York City or San Francisco vs those who live in villages in Virginia? Which side do we show to the world in our most popular shows (i.e. Friends)?
  • Yes, you can actually still learn quite a lot about Chinese culture from XHS, but understand that this is not an American app; it was not made for Americans living under the American Constitution

If none of this makes sense and you still want to pick little fights here and there... there is always X. There is always Meta. There is always whatever will become of TikTok.

And if you want a comprehensive information source of ALL ~1.4 billion Chinese citizens, an app is definitely not the place to find it. The same goes for apps like TikTok, where "everyone" can apparently post and "be seen". Do you think all Americans are represented on TikTok? (If so, we're in more trouble than we thought.)

So, for those of you who get what I'm saying (even from the title), this isn't a message for you. But for those who feel a strong desire to downvote this simply because it's rubbing you the wrong way or you have a different opinion... Please reflect and reconsider.

Some of us are capable of drawing sensible conclusiond from incomplete data. There are many very friendly people and very few arseholes in China (and yes, I have been there). Nearly all of the Chinese population has been lifted out of poverty in the last few decades, unlike America were many are being forced into it. Compare medical, education, infrastructure etc etc and China is far ahead. You need to accept that America is failing most of its citizens.

100%. It's a good place to see what China's like according to the people that are allowed to show you things so you won't see any poverty or really anything negative at all.

You'll be able to meet some friendly people and learn things that you may had no idea about to begin with. For example; I had no idea that it was ok to be openly gay in China. Also, it's ok to be trans but you have to have the bottom-surgery and have the government change your ID to say you're the gender you want to be.

Also, their government treats their citizens great and no one has anything negative or even critical to say about the government...it's like a utopia there./s

Anything negative gets deleted. I've saved a screenshot of several before they were deleted. This is not a comment from someone who has a good work/life balance.

So you're seriously saying that the people up there are lying to you?

There's nothing more real than direct communication.

Look. Obviously china has problems. I'm not trying to move there. But this exchange of culture and voices. This is a bridge when lately everyone had been building walls.. or worse

I'm treating it like a penpal/postcard kind of site. And for learning about language, culture, food, all that. I don't really go looking for political or controversial things on the app; I'm there to get away from those things and just meet some normal people. It's been the most refreshing and mentally restoring social media experience I've had in probably a decade.

Making the Jump from TikTok to Rednote(Xiaohongshu)? Here’s What You Need to Know

So you’re thinking about switching (or at least dabbling) from TikTok to **Rednote** (aka Xiaohongshu)? Here’s a quick rundown on what to expect and how to adapt: 1. **Different Vibe** * **TikTok** is all about short, snappy videos—dances, trends, and memes. * **Rednote** leans more toward lifestyle tips, product reviews, and personal stories. Think mini-blogs rather than just quick clips. 2. **Less is More—or Is It?** * On **TikTok**, you can go viral with a 15-second masterpiece. * On **Rednote**, people actually read captions and appreciate detailed posts. Don’t be afraid to write a bit more and share personal insights. 3. **Engage with the Community** * Responding to comments is key on both platforms, but **Rednote** users expect a friendlier, more helpful approach. Focus on real interaction rather than just racking up views. 4. **Use Relevant Hashtags & Keywords** * **TikTok** hashtags can be trendy and fleeting. * **Rednote** hashtags and keywords should be more targeted, especially if you’re reviewing products or sharing how-to tips. 5. **Be Ready for Culture Shifts** * The **Rednote** audience often loves beauty, travel, fashion, and “real-life” hacks. * If you’re pivoting from dance challenges, consider experimenting with lifestyle or review content to fit the platform’s style. 6. **Quality Over Quantity** * While **TikTok** can reward frequent posting, **Rednote** might favor fewer, well-thought-out posts that really resonate. High-quality visuals and genuine storytelling go a long way. Got questions about Rednote? Drop ’em below—always happy to help a fellow content creator make the jump!

The ban isn't really about privacy concerns

Why exactly? You and me know why America is banning tiktok... They can't control the narrative their like they do with Facebook or Instagram YouTube. etc The genocide in Gaza was being shown in its full without any kind of censorship... And daddy israel doesn't like that so the AIPAC who's holding the American politicians by the balls... Forced them into banning the app.... It's not about privacy or any of that.... Remember edward Snowden.? I rest my case.

Y'all know why Trump suddenly became "pro-TikTok" right?

Say it with me....because he and his oligarch buddies are getting worried Americans are waking up to the truth about the anti-China propaganda BS in Red Note and will either demand better conditions or go full socialist.
