I... work a lot with Chinese names because I studied under my granduncle who was a fengshui grandmaster. Seeing as you're from Singapore, you'd understand that people'd pay my granduncle money to "craft" auspicious Chinese names for newborn babies.

And.... from my experience, the thing with names is, especially Asians names (not only the Chinese, because I've also worked with Japanese names and I know friends who worked with Arabic names), people get very defensive when it comes to any kind of perceived negativity towards their names. However slight. So I've learned to just keep whatever opinions I have about a name to myself if said opinions weren't the enthusiastically positive type. The only exception to that is when I get consulted about a name where they asked for my opinion specifically.

My granduncle told me that the defensiveness came from decades of having to defend and explain ethic-sounding names to people (outsiders) who aren't familiar with such names.

I mean, see it like this. It'd be like introducing yourself as Florence to someone and having that someone tell you to your face that, "Oh you have an old lady's name!". Even though the comment isn't mean or rude, it wasn't exactly a nice/positive thing to say to a stranger/someone you just met.

Hope that makes sense. I'm truly sorry you were attacked though. No matter what, sending you hate was totally uncalled for.

I get that cause I got a lot of hate regarding a CNY celebration. I was saying we don't typically pile on dishes that high like in video. But people kept coming at me saying they do for holidays (which was exactly what I was saying? lol) But normally, we dont eat that exessive. My family still eats several dishes daily but not as many as the ones on CNY. Then someone acted like I'm not Chinese because I said I'm an ABC, etc. We share the same culture and traditions just as different nationalities. Why were they so rude? Alas, my comment got deleted cause Chinese netizens are only nice to foreigners who act like China is a whole new world. Lol

Anyhow, It feels like our messages are either taken out of context or they're not critical thinkers.

Own it, learn it and move on buddy. 

Why did you feel it was necessary to tell the person that the name she got from AI wasn't a common Chinese name, especially because you're not Chinese? Why can't you let people be? Ask yourself why you found it necessary to correct someone else on the internet. You caused the negative response, its unfortunate that people's responses to you were ugly.

However, when you insert yourself into someone's post, you gotta be prepared for what's coming. Just like you had an opinion, the other people had one too.

Man, I’m nervous to even seek out a Chinese name for that myself. Not a TikTok refugee here, but I want to make sure I’m not doing stupid shit, stepping on toes, or being a fucking clown. Navigating some of this is irritating.
