Why is our starting point class-locked if weapons and skills aren't?

Hey guys, I just started PoE 2 and I’m a bit confused by the design logic here.

I realized pretty quickly that you can use any skill and any weapon on any character, which is awesome. So, I wanted to make a Monk, but I wanted to start on the Warrior side of the tree. My logic was that since I’m making a melee build, it makes sense to grab the Warrior’s starting nodes for health and physical scaling right away.

But then I realized I’m forced to start in the Monk’s corner and "walk" all the way over there. It takes 29 points just to reach the Warrior tree taking the shortest path possible.

My big question is: Why?

If GGG doesn't care what weapon I use or what skill I slot in, why do they care where my first passive point goes? I've been trying to think of a single reason why we shouldn't be allowed to choose our starting point, and none of them make sense:

• It’s not about "Class Identity" because a Monk can already use Warrior skills.

• It’s not about "Balance" because I’m already allowed to go there, I’m just being taxed 29 points to do it.

It feels like I'm wasting 29 levels of my life on +5 attribute nodes just to get "permission" to play the build I want. Why not just let us pick our starting gate at character creation? Am I missing something, or is this just an unnecessary restriction?

It IS about class identity. Sure, any class can path anywhere, but proximity to certain nodes just make certain classes better suited for doing certain things. For example, monk is generally better at building evasion into his defenses because he is closer to those nodes at start
