Does ignite duration matter with compounding ignite?

Trying to wrap my head around ignite mechanics. With incinerate, since ignites are compounding, does ignite duration only matter after you run out of fuel or otherwise stop igniting the target? Or does ignite duration impact the rate of compounding?
