for topic research the combo that actually works: start with the comments section of your top performing posts and your competitors' posts. people literally tell you what they want more of. that's more reliable than any trend tool.

for audience validation, saves and shares are the only metrics worth tracking for personal brand. views tell you reach, saves tell you value. if something gets watched but not saved, it was entertaining not useful. build toward saves.

for the "data to decision" gap, the simplest framework: every week pick your top 3 posts by saves, find what they have in common (topic, format, hook style), make 3 more of that. ignore everything else.

step one, listen instead of research. go into the dms, the comments, and the sales calls if your client has them, and just collect actual phrases people use when they're stuck or confused. those are your topics. nothing a tool spits out beats a real screenshot of a customer asking the exact thing you're now writing about.

step two, for the data side i bounce between answer the public, semrush keyword magic if the budget's there, and just plain old google trends for comparing two angles head to head. then i throw the topic ideas into a shared sheet with three columns. problem the audience has, format that fits, and the angle that makes it specific to that client. boring but it works.

if you want to get really intentional, watch 5 of your client's actual competitors for a week and write down which posts get the highest engagement. it tells you what's already working in their space without guessing. that's been more useful to me than any topic research tool i've paid for.
