The "Algorithm Fatigue" is real. Building a social media alternative: What are your thoughts?

I’ve been observing a growing trend (and feeling it myself): people are getting burnt out by today’s social media giants. We’re trapped in a cycle of "Watch Time" and "Retention" driven algorithms that prioritize rage bait and mindless scrolling over actual human connection. Users often can't even see posts from the people they actually follow anymore.

I believe there is a massive opening for a platform that returns control to the user one that isn't designed to exploit dopamine loops. To tackle this, I’ve started developing a location based social media app using Flutter and Firebase.

However, building a "non toxic" social media platform comes with its own set of challenges, and I’d love to get some feedback from this community:

  1. Algorithm vs. Chronological Feed: Is a purely chronological feed still viable in 2026, or do we need a "transparent" algorithm? How do you balance discoverability without manipulation?
  2. The Discovery Mechanism: In a location based app, how can we facilitate "organic discovery" effectively? Should it be strictly distance based, or is there a better metric for connecting people to their local community?
  3. The Monetization Paradox: Is it possible to keep a platform sustainable without turning the user into the product? What are your thoughts on transparent ad models vs. subscription or micro transaction based systems?
  4. The Cold Start Problem: For those of you who have launched social platforms or apps, what’s the most critical piece of advice for building that initial "critical mass" of users?

I'm currently in the thick of the dev process, and I’d appreciate any "do's and don'ts" or features you’ve always wished for in a social app.

I've avoided most of social media for many many years mostly due to the reasons you've surfaced here. I started using X a little over two years ago now and have observed this first hand building my growth tool for X.

These are some really big questions but I will try my best for solid answers.

  1. Initially chronological makes sense but as soon as you have a volume where quality threads get buried it needs to evolve into something else, the closest example of this I've seen in practice is old school forums. It's a problem but I don't have a clear cut solution for you.

  2. If you go with purely location based, you are restricting conversations that can evolve over a global platform. One of the reasons I like X so much is I get global opinions and am not trapped in my small geographical area.
    Discovery is a challenging topic but one I've worked with closely, it depends on a users individual goals for what makes discovery worth surfacing.

  3. I think social media you are bound to be free or you wont gain traction if you are looking at large scale ground breaking new social. Versus closed paid small communities still can thrive depending on the niche. There's many models here I actually think web3 solutions are lacking where a user can actually own their own data vs it's owned by the platform.

  4. Cold start will probably be your biggest hurdle if you do find a way to surpass the other issues. That critical mass is going to be very hard to kickstart unless you have real incentive and transparency from day one. A large existing audience will most likely be needed.

As for being in the dev process and looking for do's and don'ts I think that is your most important stance so far. Don't spend years building a thing without having conversations with potential users and having traction from day one. Social medias I feel like are the hardest to get started and require serious up front considerations.

Any people that runs 100 to 10k followers pages (any social media)?

Hey all, I own a business that involves many clients that promote their product, art or website with TikTok (also Instagram, Youtube and Facebook). I want to offer them a way to post their content, or to get content created and posted for them on existing TikTok pages. Basically you got pages in a specific theme (sport, anime, cinema, culture, memes...) and you rent it for a specific period of time. You get paid every month, and all you have to do is basically connecting the account once to our system. You can opt-out anytime you want, you keep the full ownership of the account. That's basically a way to monetize your pages passively. For now I'm doing it myself with my own pages (3 tiktok pages with 500 to 3k followers, and 1 6k subscribers Youtube channel), I made around $800 renting these for less than a month. Everything dying at 300 views for so long before I finally caught the problem

I've been absolutely obsessed with short form content for the last two years. Like people have staged actual interventions about my health level of obsessed. I'm talking 11-14 hour days breaking down what separates successful videos from failures, experimenting with different hook variations, rewriting scripts until my brain hurts, testing every editing approach I could possibly get my hands on. Why this level of obsession? Because I'm absolutely certain short form video is the backbone of everything right now. Growing followers, selling anything, generating opportunities, creating brands from nothing. Every part of it depends on whether you can hold someone's attention for 30 seconds. But here's what nearly made me quit entirely: despite the constant daily grind, nothing was hitting. I'd pour 7-8 hours into crafting one video only to watch it crash at 300 views. Tried every tactic from every person claiming to have figured it out. Bought their courses. Applied their "proven" methods. Still going nowhere. I seriously started thinking maybe I'm just not the type of person who can make this work. Like maybe there's some fundamental ability I'm completely lacking. Then something clicked.
