Wild that less than a century ago, the hatred and bloodlust between these two countries was one of the nastiest “rivalries” in modern human history and now they’re basically homies patrolling the same waters.

Apes together, strong. War dumb.

I’m genuinely wondering, is the flag flown on the Japanese vessel not seen as offensive in a similar way as a German vessel flying a WW2-era flag with a swastika would be? I’m aware this battle flag design has existed in multiple variations historically and I’m more familiar with the ETO and the impact of the Swastika used by Nazi Germany. Does anyone else have a clue? I’m really curious if members of certain SEA snd Pacific Island countries would have weird feelings about seeing a modern Japanese naval ship flying The Rising Sun.

To me as a westerner it doesn’t immediately evoke the same reaction as when I see a Swastika but that’s the key, I’m a westerner so for all I know, your average person living in SEA seeing an IJN flag would feel grossed out in a similar way? (I know they’re not the IJN currently, using it to refer to that era of their naval history)
