Username appears unavailable but account seems deleted - how long does it take to be released?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand a situation with an Instagram username.

A specific account used to exist normally (posts, followers, etc.), but now:

The profile cannot be accessed anymore (page not available / link may be broken or deleted)
In DMs, the account still appears but as “Instagram User” with no profile picture or stats
The username cannot be claimed
“Forgot password” says the account does not exist
I tested from multiple devices, browsers, and accounts (mobile + desktop, incognito), same result everywhere

So the account seems completely gone from a user perspective, but the username is still unavailable.

My question:
Is this a normal Instagram retention period after deletion or name change? And if yes, how long does it usually take before the username becomes available again?

That’s always frustrating when the system shows “unavailable” but the account looks inactive. Sometimes platforms take ages to release old handles. Usually there’s a 30-day window where the owner can still change their mind, and after that, it can take another 14 days or even months for the name to actually drop.
