How has no one mentioned the Mary Kate Olsen bangles as armbands thing yet? So many of these celebs are encouraging this shit and just because they know not to say it out loud doesn’t mean they aren’t doing so in other ways.
When I was modelling I developed anorexia. No one did anything, I looked like Ariana Grande. What finally brought it home for me was when I was refusing treatment and my mum said “all those girls out there like your cousin (who was 14), see you in ads and think that’s okay, that’s achievable, they don’t know you’re dying” I’m paraphrasing but it was something like that. I wasn’t famous or anything, but people in the spotlight absolutely have a responsibility to not glorify their illnesses. It’s not my fault I got sick, but it was my fault being sick and continuing to work and LYING by saying I was vegan and worked out. This is why I think it’s okay to be honest about someone like Ariana Grande. She might be sick, but she knows what she’s doing to look the way she is and she is lying to herself and everyone else about that. She needs to step back and get some fucking help.
Go back another generation and you had stars like Karen Carpenter looking like this. I can’t see an old photo or video of her without her anorexia screaming at me, but at the time no one publicly questioned it.
I had no idea who Eugenia Cooney was and had to look her up and dear God...horrific.
I was around during the Kate Moss era, "heroin chic" should never have come back. So many girls died, or permanently damaged their organs and bodies trying to make themselves deathly skinny.
I mean. She’s not wrong….
Don't forget Cythia Erivo. She's just as bad
The correct way to deal with celebrity news is to grunt, then continue living your life.
Making a video about it is not living your life.
Being alive to see the dangerously thin fad come back from the dead has been a bit crazy-making.
I (37F) struggled with anorexia as a teen & young adult. I STILL have an unhealthy relationship with food & struggle daily with body dysmorphia & disordered eating.
I can confirm that my favourite celebrities as a teen skewed my perception of what I thought was normal & beautiful, leading to my obsession with thinness. Mary Kate Olsen, Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie & Paris Hilton - all scarily thin - all women I admired & regularly watched on TV.
I typically don’t think commenting on people’s body’s is okay. However, when you have a culture of extreme thinness among celebrities, who inevitably influence how teens/young adults see themselves & what they consider to be normal, it can get dangerous. For example, Arianna Grande is objectively underweight & having her openly say she’s not sick, feels the best she’s ever felt & is healthier than she’s ever been, is not okay. Eating disorders are no joke - they cloud your judgement, manipulate your mind & end up skewing people’s perceptions of themselves. These ultra skinny celebrities are most likely slaves to their own mind (hence the denial) & people like this chick, having frank conversations about what is likely going on, is so important. Eating disorders were normalized in the 90’s & 00’s & people suffered because of it. People need to speak up this time around cause extreme thinness & anorexia culture can permanently damage your body, your mind & literally change the course of your life.
