This is what happened why is it bad to show other so we don’t forget? They were all part of the play and I’m sure had the ability to opt out of participating. Maybe they thought it was important to share.? I understand how it’s offensive but it did happen and we see to be moving away from remembering it happened!!
There’s tbh nothing inherently wrong with portraying cruel events in history via theater so long as it’s done respectfully, which from the looks of it, it probably wasn’t.
Americans are such fucking pussies - can't watch a reenactment of their own history without throwing a giant hissy fit. As long as the students all consented and felt safe, there is absolutely nothing wrong with showing people the disgusting realities of the past. Absolutely no one did anything wrong here except complain about it.
Lol “anonymous teacher” everybody at the school knows exactly who that is.
If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumber’d here While these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, No more yielding but a dream, Gentles, do not reprehend: if you pardon, we will mend.
It is difficult for untrained student actors and the less talented playwrites and directors to convey a theme as a perfect. Even Shakespear saw that. Doesn't mean that play's message can't or shouldn't be told.
There’s some element of censorship in these concerns. I get the concern about dehumanization, but reenactment is a helpful theatrical means to learn history. Not as clear cut as this piece makes it out to be.
The teachers didn't stop it because it was entertaining. When social media got hold of it, NOW YOU'RE HORRIFIED!? I call BS!
I honestly don’t know what to say about this. I’m white as all hell so I can’t speak to the insensitivity of this towards visible minorities.
I don’t think it’s glorifying slave auctions (I would assume it’s not because there would be a much bigger uproar about this) and I think that maybe the value of shock might be the intent of it.
Whether it’s about getting people talking about slavery since they are now blocking education about it in certain southern states or maybe beating it into the heads of people that yes, THIS WAS THIS FUCKING BAD.
More context is needed.

Slavery wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for this play
