Are you using your social media as a portfolio? Is it still worth it?

Hello! I’ve been a designer for a few years now, and I used to have an Instagram account dedicated to my design and illustration work. However, I wasn’t consistent enough and didn’t always have the time to keep posting new projects, so the account never really grew that much.

This year, I decided to start a new account, but this time I don’t want it to focus only on my work. I’d like to share my hobbies and interests as well, making it more of a personal + professional space. I feel like social media today works better when people can connect with the person behind the account and see that there’s a real human being with different passions and interests, not just a portfolio.

At the same time, I follow some creators who mainly post their work, and I can see how that might be more appealing to potential clients. Instead of having to search for their projects, everything is presented clearly in one place.

Do you think it’s still worth building an online portfolio through social media, or is it better to use Instagram more as a social bridge while focusing on a separate portfolio platform, like Behance or a personal website, that can be shared there instead?

The creators who only post polished work can look impressive, but they sometimes feel emotionally distant or interchangeable unless their style is already highly recognizable

Just my personal preference (so take it with a grain of salt), but I don't care about the personal lives of creators. I just want to see your art/design/sports/cars/interior design/whatever. I frankly don't need to see your IG Story from Saturday night dinner, or your vacation to Greece.

i think moving toward a more personal brand is actually the right move for designers these days. people really connect with the process and the person behind the work rather than just seeing a polished final project. just dont feel pressured to post every single thing u do, cuz quality over quantity is definately better for building a genuine audience

Yeah, it's not necessarily a selling anchor,, if you have it as a portfolio, but it does weight in trustworthiness for clients who get there from your website or other places. It's better to have it than not, imo.

But adding some personal things might make it warmer, and easier to connect directly to other ig users.

i'd treat social as the lobby, not the whole portfolio.

instagram is good for proof that you're active, how you think, process clips, small experiments, maybe a bit of personality. but if a client is actually deciding whether to hire you, they still need a clean place where the best work is easy to scan.

so i'd do:

  • website/behance for 6-10 strongest projects
  • instagram for process + recent work
  • stories/personal posts only if they connect to your taste or creative life

mixing hobbies is fine, just don't make people hunt for the work

at this point social media works like a live portfolio. clients check how you talk before they ask for your resume. one designer i know posted simple redesign breakdowns twice a week and got 2 inbound clients with less than 1k followers. showing your thinking matters more than looking polished all the time.

Any people that runs 100 to 10k followers pages (any social media)?

Hey all, I own a business that involves many clients that promote their product, art or website with TikTok (also Instagram, Youtube and Facebook). I want to offer them a way to post their content, or to get content created and posted for them on existing TikTok pages. Basically you got pages in a specific theme (sport, anime, cinema, culture, memes...) and you rent it for a specific period of time. You get paid every month, and all you have to do is basically connecting the account once to our system. You can opt-out anytime you want, you keep the full ownership of the account. That's basically a way to monetize your pages passively. For now I'm doing it myself with my own pages (3 tiktok pages with 500 to 3k followers, and 1 6k subscribers Youtube channel), I made around $800 renting these for less than a month. I've been absolutely obsessed with short form content for the last two years. Like people have staged actual interventions about my health level of obsessed. But here's what nearly made me quit entirely: despite the constant daily grind, nothing was hitting. I'd pour 7-8 hours into crafting one video only to watch it crash at 300 views.
