Kenyan engineer Joseph Nguthiru found a way to turn an invasive plant species into bio-degradable plastic, thus helping reduce plastic waste, lowering mosquito breeding grounds, and creating green jobs in local communities.

This is fantastic, now the reason it will never go anywhere.

It is IMPOSSIBLY cheap to produce plastic. Largely because plastic is a by-product of making oil usable. So as long as we are processing oil, plastic will be ubiquitous because it was created as a way to use some of the "waste" from processing oil. You will never out cheap plastic because as long as humans are processing oil, we will have a limitless supply of plastics.

To make an idea like this truly economically viable we need to end the processing of oil, which we are not close to doing. We need an alternative to oil before we even can have a discussion about an alternative to plastic. No need to involve conspiracies or the CIA, plain old economics will kill this idea in the crib. 🤷‍♂️
