I have core memories of aunts, cousins, and friend's families insisting on spoiling me, earning my trust, then being passive aggressive for me ordering the "most expensive thing on the menu".

There's a special place in hell for people who do that to children.

A Root Beer Float?! That’s going straight for the luxury drink right there. A regular root beer maybe, but a float is only acceptable if you’ve proposed or preferably already married and have 2 kids and a house (then you have to share).

The best tip I ever learned about politeness is to follow what the host/hostess does.

These comments are mortifying. Any adult baiting a kid into humiliation is a POS that will always punch down.

My sister had a friend who would order meals to go (in her late 20s) if we were buying  as if they were sides

"When you offer a hand and they take the whole arm" situation

Buddies parents took me to Shula’s steakhouse once as a “thank you” gesture. Said I could order anything I wanted on the menu. I had never been anywhere even remotely as expensive or nice as that place before, so I was extremely uncomfortable.

Ended up getting the cheapest entree on the menu, which was a $25 chicken dish. They made snide and passive aggressive comments the entire time about me not ordering steak. “We took you to a steakhouse and you didn’t order steak?”

A friend's family took me to dinner with them, I ordered a coke, then they cancelled my drink order because they aren't the type of family that orders drinks with their food.
