I don’t think kid is acting or joking. He’s earnestly talking about his real feelings for the first time in like 6 years. Because boys aren’t allowed to/supposed to talk about their feelings earnestly. So when they finally do with people with whom they feel safe, it erupts out with real big feelings like this.
