I had the same realisation as a Brit. I was in Atlanta, I remember trying to walk from one mall to another near by and the "sidewalk" just ended and I was in the middle of the highway fearing for my life. I gently walked to a safe spot and called an uber - did not end up going to the other mall because I felt too embarrassed to take a car such a short distance.
If I understand anything about the USA this is something that can be easily fixed with more pick up trucks and guns.
They want you to consume.
There's no financial gain to be made from people walking so why bother.
Walking is free and we can't have that.
All of the major US car manufacturers we know today lobbied for our shitty transportation infrastructure over 100 years ago.
After WWI our politicians sold us out for a quick buck so Ford, Chevrolet, GM and the like would make us dependent on their vehicles.
Those same politicians invested in these companies as soon as the stock market opened and have had a vested interest in keeping us car dependent ever since.
Once you dive down the rabbit hole of how our highway systems are intentionally designed to isolate and disenfranchise rural Americans to keep them poor and uneducated, you kind of accept that there is no greater good under capitalism.
Prewar North American neighborhoods are the most sought after in each city because you can walk!
Needs an underground tunnel at the intersections.
You can build shops into these too..
Wait, you all have sidewalks??
Omg bro yes ik and if you walk in a rural place ur seen as a crazy person like bro I just enjoy walking da fuq
Because you live in a car hell, we know.
