It seems to me that the strategy there is to make fun of yourself before anyone else can. You add another layer to the defense by explaining, in detail, why you made the mistake to display that you're actually a very smart person. But you gotta wrap the whole thing in a funny voice so that it seems like one big joke that you're not taking very seriously because you're not actually insecure at all.

Bullying to some extent was normal for millenials. So we have that instinct about things that might get made fun of. One way to steal the thunder from a bully is to embrace and acknowledge the thing they are going to make fun of. I think this is where it comes from.
