I feel as though people who complain about social media, has fallen victim into the predatory practices these sites participate in. Either between inflammatory algorithms cherry-picking content it knows will drive engagement, as seen on Facebook or with Twitter... Misleading content, like clickbait titles and thumbnails or misinformation. Short-form content frying people's brains and patience, and the ever-persistent crawl of monetization choking out the human soul on these sites.
It really depends if these people even want things to change. Sometimes they just complain for the sake of it, then return the nose to grindstone of their self-sabotaging habits. But I also think when people do seek out alternatives or ways to self-improve, nobody can settle on the one thing like how an immense audience of people moved to apps like Snapchat or Discord. When I think, arguably, that expectation has been what kills sanctuaries online to begin with.
I think for anything to meaningfully change, we need to see alternative mobile phones and tablets explode in popularity. People need to relearn tech and internet literacy all over again. People need to recognize when and how they're getting duped, and how to react accordingly. We need to break down these monopolies these tech giants have over our lives online.
