Most people write a song to fit the beat, so it has a consistent tempo and the lyrics naturally flow with the music.

He bravely chose the opposite approach: force the tempo to awkwardly contort itself around the lyrics, creating a shaky, jarring rhythm that's impossible to get into. Totally an intentional artistic choice to be emo and rebellious, and absolutely not because he's a terrible musician.
