do we need "No algorithm" social media?

We see reddit, facebook and all works on their algorithm that decide what post get how much attraction benefiting advertizers.

how many of us would appreciate the idea of "No algorithm" social media where platform has no role deciding who will see what.

you simply get all posts based on one or more of following:

  1. people in network
  2. hashtag or catagory you subscribe

the posts gets appear to all who selected one of above.

Linkedin and reddit limit your post by providing access to small group and then bigger audience based on their Algorithm. and that is restricting the liberty of social media..

Many moons ago, social media’s focus was to keep in touch with your friends. It wasn’t about brands reaching you, or going viral, or getting something pushed on your feed. The purpose was to see pics of your friends, hear their random opinions, and chat when you weren’t able to get in front of them. It was to keep in touch with your circle no matter how big or small.

Because of this people posted pics of trips, nights out, and their family without the expectation that the entire world would be seeing it. It was fun. So if that sounds fund - a non-algorithm sounds lovely. I don’t know how they’re going to make money to keep the platform alive, but the idea takes me back to a simpler time.

I think no algorithm would be cool. The problem is, when the amount of posted content gets to a certain amount, even with hashtags, it gets difficult. You need some sort of algorithm at the very least. Something that determines if others will like the content, and whether or not to push it forward. but it can also prioritize friends, and make sure they always see what you post.

Been building exactly this for a while now actually. Feed is strictly chronological, based on network and tags like you described, nothing deciding who gets seen more. No follower-count advantage either, a brand new account can get the same reach as an old one on the same post.

The part everyone asks about is money. Skipped the ad model entirely instead of trying to make "ad-free" work while still needing ads in the background. People fund things directly instead of the platform selling attention.

Small scale so far, can't say it survives at Reddit or Facebook size. But it at least proves the no-algorithm part isn't just a slogan, it's just an engineering choice most platforms didn't want to make because it grows slower.

Need it or not, it does exist. Neocities has web rings, and anyone can create a site these days and link to friends. A friend of mine launched an alpha of Kowloon, which has zero algorithms and is based on old school publish and subscribe (but not money-based like Patreon). He’s not in it for profit, and it’s an open-source project you can deploy on any server you like. There are other similar examples, but the key point about social media is you have to have people… which is why so many startups go all in on the algorithms. Money.

Algorithmic sorting of content, much to the chagrin of many, is the reason these platforms actually works. Purely chronological unranked feeds reward spam and suck to browse, there's a reason platforms which actually get used don't do it that way.

RSS feeds are already a thing and moreorless do what you're describing, and there's lots of reasons they did not and never will replace social media. Even things like Mastodon and Bluesky have "algorithms" because treating all posts from all posters as equally valuable content is bad design that means you have some friends you'll literally never see anything from because other friends post constantly.

Any people that runs 100 to 10k followers pages (any social media)?

Hey all, I own a business that involves many clients that promote their product, art or website with TikTok (also Instagram, Youtube and Facebook). I want to offer them a way to post their content, or to get content created and posted for them on existing TikTok pages. Basically you got pages in a specific theme (sport, anime, cinema, culture, memes...) and you rent it for a specific period of time. You get paid every month, and all you have to do is basically connecting the account once to our system. You can opt-out anytime you want, you keep the full ownership of the account. That's basically a way to monetize your pages passively. For now I'm doing it myself with my own pages (3 tiktok pages with 500 to 3k followers, and 1 6k subscribers Youtube channel), I made around $800 renting these for less than a month.
