I studied 200 short videos and found the reasons they failed, here's what they all have in common.
1) No / Weak Hook
The videos that performed the least had nothing to grab my attention in the first 3 seconds. The first 3 seconds are crucial to invoke curiosity into your audience to give them a reason to keep watching. On the other hand, 90% of the viral videos had a text hook that makes you want to keep watching. They open loops then close them.
Here's a few examples - "This mistake cost me $10,000" | "Why working out more actually makes you fatter" | "University is a waste of time, here's what you should do instead"
2) No Reason To Stay
Out of the failed videos I studied, almost all of them had this in common. They didn't give me a reason to stay. The payoff came to early and they answered my questions too early, so I scrolled.
Here's what they should've done - 80% of the video should build curiosity and leave the audience with questions - the other 20% should be the reveal to their questions. This makes the audience stick around until the end, which is golden. An audience that sticks boosts watch time, which is the most valuable metric on social media; it's what signals to the mysterious algorithm that the video is worth pushing out.
3) No Reason To Comment
As creators we all strive for virality, but going viral once wont make you a successful creator. Developing a loyal community will. And the best way to do that? It's commenting. You must have something in your video that encourages your audience to leave a comment. Whether that's an absurd take, something strange (like cooking videos when they use an iPad as a chopping board), or by literally asking them their opinion on something. This makes your audience feel involved and makes you build a connection with them, which makes them stick around.
4) They didn't follow a structure
Viral videos always, without fail, follow a structure. There's a hook designed to grab your attention, there's a body optimised for watch time so you stay, and there's a call to action, so you follow them for their other posts. None of the failed videos did this.
The Takeaway
Out of the 200 videos, the ones that did the best weren't the most creative or luckiest. They were the most deliberate. Each viral video was thoughtfully structured. If you want a second pair of eyeballs on your own stuff, drop a link to one of your videos below and I'll tell you honestly where it's weak.
