One time we raised some mail order caterpillars to butterflies and went to release them. My oldest put her hand in the enclosure, carefully let one get on her finger and pulled it out. When the butterfly flew off, my dog promptly snapped it up and ate it.

Omg my heart breaks for the older one! She watched it go from caterpillar, to cocoon, to full on beautiful butterfly, it trusted her enough to stay on her finger, and moments after being freed, it is killed. Poor thing.
