i switched my addiction from being on social media making comments (mostly), to making endless wishlists of things i’d want to buy on different apps. then i look at the amount of money it would be to buy all that and decide that i don’t even like it all that much, until i curate my perfect items that i do eventually buy with my tiny paycheck. it’s a long process because money is tight and so is my attention span.
it’s very time consuming and did fully replace all my social media apps except this one. either im at work, adulting, or just imagining my next wishlist item or experience what it could be. i’m 100% happier now too, i also found out what i really like because it forces u to put a hierarchy on what u want (or want to do) most.
basically i went from commenting, because honestly no one cares about my opinion anyway, to visualizing and then buying myself the things i always wanted but never got because i was too busy growing up. this birthday coming up is going to be the best one i’ve had in decades, and it was so easy to achieve.
i no longer go on facebook because everyone fights, i no longer use instagram because it’s apparently designed to depress me, and i only go on tiktok to watch other peoples video reviews of stuff. as i stopped going online so often to see other people’s reactions, i realized i was mostly addicted to that part, not even caring about whatever reaction it was, even if it upset me. if u mindlessly watch things, ur brain only stimulates itself over pain or pleasure (things that stand out emotionally to you) and online most of the crap is pain. or useless things your brain can’t grasp as important.
try it for a month, it’s fun! the lack of people endlessly suffering online is easy to avoid and replace with other dopamine activating activities. i’m lazy so i chose toys. to collect nostalgic items from my past that got lost along the way. when new things get released or i find an old thing for a good price it makes just as much if not more dopamine than i ever got using drugs.
i also quit drinking; i think quitting (not deleting just not watching) social media had the most to do with it. when i most often wanted a beer it was after grabbing my phone and getting upset at whatever was waiting for me to see.
