I remember when my dad made me put my plate on the floor and eat it like a dog because I got some food on my tshirt.

I remember what she's saying, they'd make me sit there for hours until I ate it all. Because there really was nothing else.

I remember the cupboards being bare and having HP sauce on bread as lunch because the money for that week was spent on cigarettes, alcohol and strong painkillers for my parents.

I remember only ever drinking water for weeks unless I went to my nans, where she'd have juice.

Growing up poor on a council estate is not fun.

It’s bad parenting whether you’re poor or rich. It gives kids a really bad relationship with food.

He’s 1000% right. The old school tactic teaches kids:
1.) They have to clear a plate.(results in learning to override the feeling of being full resulting in a myriad of food and diet related issues. Obesity, diabetes, eating disorders. And ALL the mental health issues that come with them)
2.) They have no bodily autonomy. (They can never say no, we all know how that’s a terrible lessen for a kid to learn.)
3.) Figures of authority are always right and to never resist.
I get that prvious generations were not enlightened, we don’t have that same limitation. It’s a great opportunity for them to have a dialogue about good and bad behavior. It’s a huge opportunity for positive change in the world. No hate to her, I know she’s wasn’t trying to publically humiliate him or anything it was just for a laugh. She now has a cool moment to think, “hmm do I want to continue with that type of indoctrination of kids or foster change in the next generation” it’s a cool opportunity to have. She might learn a bit about herself too. Another huge win!!! Edit: spelling error. Precious instead of previous

he’s right. my dad used to strap me to the chair with a belt till i finished my plate. guess who now has no idea what “full” feels like and eats till she’s sick?

Everyone saying he’s right doesn’t know what its like having to choose between rent drugs and food for the week

I have been a single dad. My rent alone was half my income and I got a little support from the government. I have said a few times (because at the time it was true) look if you dont finish there is nothing else. Some of you have never been shopping with £20 and a calculator and it shows

When i was like 4/5/6, I was at a babysitters house one day. My single mom worked late into the night most nights so I would have dinner with the babysitters.

They gave me something and told me it was elephant meat, I refused to eat it, they told me i could sit at the table until I ate it.

I sat at the table with whatever it was in front of me until well past midnight, when mom came to get me she was beyond pissed off.

Not how POV works.

It is abuse, and hes right to say it.

It costs nothing for a parent to take the plate away and say "okay. Go play." Then when the kid comes back hungry later, offer to reheat the food. It costs nothing to say "well, that's all we have" and set it aside again. Or scramble it with eggs the next day.

A child who is not hungry is not starving. They will survive.

It takes so much more work and effort to be a punishing, abusive parent. To make a child sit somewhere for hours. To make them eat cold food. To threaten them. To keep threatening them. There's no excuse.

If you put ketchup on your plate you better use it all. Zero waste🫩 And a grandmother would put big ham fat chunks in her pea soup and there was no hot chocolate after if you didn't eat it all. So I just learned how to be a sneaky liar at 7yrs old.
