Why Do So Many Users Think The Earth Has 12 Billion People?

I’ve seen so many posts with hundreds of thousands to millions of Likes which are like “12 Billion People and ___,” and everybody in the comments entirely agrees and points out the recent study that scientists miscalculated the population. But no where in that study does it say it’s likely 12 specifically, neither has it been proven, and I can’t seem to find any source stating it’s 12. Was there some sort of video saying the world had 12 Billion because I’m genuinely so confused on where this wave of people are coming from.

I’ve never seen anything that specifically estimated the world’s population to be 12 billion, only that the population is likely much higher than 8.2 billion and that the population could be as much as 53% higher than that (so that would put it around 12 billion). But yeah, no definitive source saying it’s in the ballpark of 12 billion for sure.

What I heard (which tbh is also from TikTok so who knows) was that census data from countries that have extreme rural areas extremely under counted their populations bc a lot of rural areas do not list births and such.

Also for places like China that had the single child policy, people weren’t admitting to having more than one child so those weren’t being counted either.

So from what I’ve seen it’s anywhere from 7-12 billion and people just love to use the most exaggerated number so

What I heard was we overestimated population? I have no idea myself, though.
