Why does almost every Canadian TikTok account have the flag next to their name?

I’m aware this is a goofy question but like every comment section there’s like 20 ppl who just have the flag next to their name more than any other country. Are people just that patriotic up there or is it some feature that people have flags next to their name if their account is based in Canada?

It was bc after TT went dark & came back for the 1st time here in the US Canadians talked a lot of shit about not wanting to be associating with US users anymore & the flags identified who was Canadian.

After American threats to their country via tariffs and “to make them the 51st state”, a strong sense of outrage and Canadian patriotism has come to the forefront. As part of this, a buy Canadian campaign has been very successful - with those products often showing a Canadian flag.

I suspect this is a similar effort to raise awareness and support of Canadian creators.

It started when TT was banned in the US for, like, 12 hrs. There was a small trend going on called “#CommonwealthTikTok”, people started displaying their flags next to their names to signify which Commonwealth country they were from so we could all stay connected.

They’re either patriotic af, or they are part of the convoy, there’s no in between.

I put one next to my name not long after all Trump's bullshit talk about making us a 51st state. It really brought out the patriotism in me lol

The USA threatened to invade, and they are seriously pissed about it and getting very patriotic.

Aussie here, remember when TikTok was banned in the U.S for a bit? There was a trend going around that everyone was to put their flag in their names so we could branch out and embrace international cultures. It was #CommonwealthTikTok. I still have my flag displayed in my username as well. 🇦🇺

Basically everyone outside the U.S got the message and we proudly display our flags. We’re tired of U.S Defaultism and stops people from assuming everything we say and do relates to the U.S. It also made it easier to connect with other creators from either our own country or other countries.

The biggest reason was during that temp ban we were suddenly flooded with a very different (and pleasant) experience on TikTok. Seeing entirely different creators that we’d never seen before. People weren’t shouting at me anymore. I wasn’t seeing constant misinformation & fear mongering posts anymore. Not a single scrap of U.S politics or loud, annoying trends. The comments also changed almost instantly. All the ragebait comments had suddenly disappeared. There were no longer people arguing or being racist or hateful in the comments. It’s also a known fact that TikTok’s algorithm constantly shoves U.S content down our throats when we don’t want it.

When I say dollars you know I’m talking about AUD. When a Canadian says dollars you know they’re talking about CAD. It removes so much confusion when someone says “this country” or makes any reference to local issues.

I know some people who outright boycott any and all American content for various reasons, but that brief period when the U.S was banned from the app was genuinely a surreal experience. I won’t lie to you. TikTok was a very pleasant space during those 12 hours.
