I had a Hawaiian coworker at a theater job in Arizona. It was my first job he was a cool guy but when I would ask him about Hawaii and politics it got depressing very fast. We as a nation have not been kind to our 50th state. It really is an afterthought

I have spoken with Hawaiians, who said they didn’t feel like they were American at all. Like we were tourists visiting some other country. But mainlanders feel like Hawaii is part of America. It’s just an American paradise. Both things are true.

The situation sounds like it sucks, and I hope it improves. But peaceful?.... I would like to remind folks that Hawaii wasn't one nation when Europeans landed complete with a benevolent queen. That position was created through bloodshed and conquest. One ambitious tribe went on a conquest with purchased guns to 'unite' all the islands less than 20 years after James Cook first landed. History is complicated.

Hawai’i absolutely shouldn’t be a state. I don’t even know why America conquered it, they were doing perfect on their own, and so were we.
