If you're not rolling spymasters there might be a reason why
So what I am talking about here is not bad RNG, not rolling spymasters for 5 or 10 maybe even 15 temple runs is unlucky, and feels bad, that is not what this post is about.
My issues started when my snake got to the third corner of the temple. Unfortunately, the spymaster that I placed a couple turns before gets deleted as I used 3 of my locks the turn before to try (unsuccessfully) to clean up the corner. But, importantly, my spymaster that is now at the end of my chain did assassinate the turn before so it is now level 2.
This is when I stop rolling spymasters, it has taken me maybe a week to get my temple to this point and suddenly all progress stops. After about 30 runs (15 hours) with no spymaster rolls I start looking for answers. This is when I discover this video linked at the very bottom of the comments on a reddit thread: https://youtu.be/oPL01fpFEkk?si=lxVLULhy34FYARKp
The video claims that once you reach a certain number of rooms the game will stop giving you spymasters unless you have a level one spymaster. The claim is that the game gives you the spymaster when you have a level one spymaster so that it can assassinate and get to level two, level three is achieved with the level up medallion. I am super skeptical of this claim but I keep it in the back of my mind.
Finally, about 10 runs later I drop the rare spymaster medallion. Keep in mind this is a different mechanic from rolling the room card. I place the medallion and my very next run I roll a spymaster room card. FINALLY! But, because I just placed my spymaster medallion I'm not yet ready to add another spymaster to my chain so I just throw it in the sacrificial blob in the middle of my temple. BIG MISTAKE.
So, of course my spymaster in the chain eats the one that I placed in the blob (upgrading to level 2) and then the one in the blob immediately gets destabilized. This time I go 38 runs without rolling a spymaster room. Again, finally, I drop another spymaster medallion, and sure enough the next room cards I roll after I place it have a spymaster, but this time I am smart and I don't place it in the blob to be assassinated. The next THREE ROLLS I get spymaster cards, and now finally I am back to building my temple as usual. This evening, for the first time in weeks I was able to grow my snake by 5 rooms.
I know that my anecdotal experience isn't iron clad, but it's going to take a lot to convince me something fishy isn't going on here. In my search for answers a lot of people have been calling this a shadow nerf and validating that it is happening to them too. It is curious that none of the streamers who hopped on the trend early and now have their temples fully built seemed to have this issue, and honestly I would love to see a video of someone in the last couple weeks rolling a spymaster under the conditions that I describe because I don't want to believe that GGG would silently change the rules, rug pulling the late comers like me.
But also, if I was GGG and I was seeing lesser iron runes going for 185ex I might think that this trade economy is bad for beginners and therefore bad for business. Another weird thing is that as soon as I placed my level one spymaster I seemed to be dropping an absolutely absurd amount of level-up medallions which would of course get me in the situation where I don't have a level one spymaster if I were to level up my chain.
Curious if anyone else is seeing something similar or if I really am the unluckiest MF in the galaxy.
TLDR: If you have a big temple and only level 2/3 spymasters you wont roll a spymaster card (probably). To roll spymasters keep one of them at level one
