CPU temps on 9800x3d

hi all, I recently upgraded to a 9800x3d and a DDR5 setup from a DDR4 setup. I expected a huge jump in quality and drop in temps but that's not what I'm seeing during maps. PC specs:

- 9800x3d

- Arctic Freezer 3 280mm (this might be the culprit as the recommended is 360)

- Antec flux pro case (PC temps dropped by 10-12c after the case upgrade)

- 32GB CL36 ram

- 3080 GPU

During maps I'm averaging to 88c. I asked in global chat and people seem to not go above 70-75 during maps on maxed out settings on a similar setup, so idk what I'm doing wrong.

Reminds me of that clip where they removed the plastic from the heat sink after checking why it was so hot

280mm Freezer 3 inside an Antec flux should be able to handle the heat of a 9800 with no effort.

Might your thermal paste be poorly applied or either pump or fans running super slow?

The other commenters suggestion about enabling PBO2 with something like a -20mV voltage offse is also a good idea, but do that after investigating reasons for high temps first.

As long as it's below 95c it's fine, that's kinda how newer Ryzens work by pumping performance until thermal limit.

You can ofc do PBO2, https://www.reddit.com/r/ryzen/comments/1gq1yu9/universal_guide_to_configuring_all_ryzen_9000/

Also can try ECO mode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6aKQ-eBFk0

Something is wrong because my 14900ks never goes above 55C.

Those are ok temps for this CPU, i used to have even worse. But i did a -40 undervolt and temps went down a LOT, most i'm seeing now is like ~75 in BF6, where before i was hitting even 95-96

Have you undervolted a little bit? I'm doing -15 all cores and pbo. Getting 80-85c with worse aio

Looks like an installation or airflow issue. Check the mounting pressure, paste application and see if the temps improve drastically if you remove the side panel. That would mean there's a lot of trapped heat inside the case.

And no, these are not normal temps, but also not critical. They're too high for your cooling solution though.

Du you have the problem with game stopping in demanding content, and those wheels come on black screen and game restarts after 20-25sek? I have a 14700k Intel and struggle so much with this. Can happen 3 times in a 35 room temple. And always when I encounter a big boss or in spymaster room which is graphics heavy. I consider buying a new system with a 9800x3d just because of poe2. It sucks since my system is not that old and adequate for all other content than poe2, but I am so sick of dying because of lag and shaders going nuts

people need to stop worrying about temp as long as theirs PC is working fine. Even if your PC will run at max 105˘C all the time, you will sooner buy new CPU before this one dies. It will last more then 10 years. And dont listen to people who will tell you that the temps are to high.

Higher temps do lower lifespan of CPU, but not in the way you will notice. You need to worry about temps only if you planning to have this CPU until you die from old age.

PS: if you cap you FPS bellow max that your PC can give (aka. 60FPS or lower), you will have lower temps on all components.

X3d CPUs are notorious for their temps. Maybe your cooling system doesn't cut it. Especially if you went for lower specs from recommended.

And if PC was pre-built I would check the way that cooler is installed and probably redo the whole thing. Fuckups happen all the time and you can easily drop 10C or so simply by using better thermal paste and by spreading it right (i.e. super thin).
