Witch hunter builds that can compete

I started PoE 2 with Fate of the Vaal and I'm kinda done with it now - even though I didn't really do everything but that's okay.

But since I'm still feeling pretty inexperienced especially when it comes to builds, I thought I'd plan ahead for 0.5 and check out some builds I might wanna start with. I know I know patch notes can change everything but being prepared never hurts.

So I was thinking of trying out a Witch Hunter. The crossbow mechanic seems cool and do does sorcery ward.

So, how are people playing Witch Hunters these days? What skills are actually good? Which ones require investment and which are good to start with?

How are they doing compared to more meta builds? I have a feeling that the disparity between good and top tier is much greater in PoE 2 than it was I. the first game.

Any insights?

Jung's oil grenade is really fun and strong, not the fastest but no budget need at all and super tanky. I recommend to have a try before it is patched. It's the first character I pushed to 100.

For witch hunters there is permafrost and fragmentation rounds which is pretty good. I also tried tactician with galvanic shards and stormblast.

Permafrost obviously has freeze that is really good for immobilising enemies. But tactician gets pin on projectile damage. I also prefer herald of thunder over ice. The tactician also uses mirage archer to trigger stormblast bolts so it has really good boss damage.

Ruetoo has a tactician guide that also uses a ascendency node that makes persistent buffs cost 1/2 spirit. The only unique it requires is painters gloves for trinity. And a lavianga mana flask allows for some passive tree nodes with during flask effects requirements to be used. But even without the uniques inthink the build is quite strong.

For witch hunter pohx has a build with permafrost. My issue with the permafrost build was boss damage which is why I changed to tactician with stormblast.

Permafrost has been really strong for me both in softcore and hardcore. Damage isn't an issue any more after the switch to crit.

Witch hunter

Anything goes. You have the best protective layer in the game in the form of Sorcery Ward. It's a very forgiving ascension class in that sense, so feel free to experiment to your heart's content and see what works for you. The only real limitation is that you will have to stack tons of armour and/or evasion no matter what.

And then there's the ascension node that gives you 100 weapon skillpoints, which means you can mix and match in some truly silly ways. But since most people flock to meta and not everyone who doesn't actually writes a guide, this is a bit of an uncharted waters territory. If experimentation isn't your cup of tea, maybe choose a different class or simply the most popular guide.

Witch hunter has sorcery ward for massively buffed defensive layers and the concentration branch for a free more damage multiplier on everything you do (most notably against bosses or tanky rares) so you can run whatever weapon you want basically and you have some generic good stuff.

I believe just copying a whirling assault titan build on witch hunter would be very effective, I haven’t had the time to level a 5th character though.
