It's low hanging fruit stuff. Anyone falling for it is more likely to dl stuff.

On the most basic level, they just want to get you to a secondary location so they aren't bound by the rules of the first. You get to the discord and they tell you a real money price or something else that violates the terms of the game. Much harder to enforce since the game mods would only have chat logs up until they link the discord and then it's your word against theirs that their "free" run actually has a dollar sign attached.

Some just want to pump up the numbers, after all a server with 70 members is a lot more impressive than a server with 3 even if most of the members aren't actively chatting. They can use you to lend confidence to whatever they're doing.

Or they're just trying to connect info, like connect your POE account to an email address or phone number, or discord account, that info has value and often gets sold between groups of scammers. The more data points they can connect the higher the chance that they'll be able to successfully scam you or gain access to your accounts.

There's a chance that it's phishing, you click the link and you're prompted to log in again and you give them your info or they give you some malware to download.

Perhaps I got lucky but i did this, joined their discord server and whatnot. It's a group called MMOM if anyone cares. Was never asked to download anything and the free run was legit, however after looking around some they also offer rmt services... the group hasn't been pushy about buying anything but it's definitely a foot in the door type situation.

Ive never heard about this. Ive joined a ton of free 4th ascendancies and none of them asked me to do anything really.

Its 100% a scam though.
