why is +3 comet prism of belief so expensive?

I asked the same question in g2 but couldnt get a good answer.

prism of belief for +3 comet costs 6 mirrors. This will increase comet damage by roughly 50%. Sounds good enough to justify the price right?

However the way coc or coa works is that its also based on the damage you do with whatever skill you use to activate either one (or both). I could instead buy the prism of belief that increases that main skill, in my case Ice nova and it would cost me only 1600 divs instead of 6 mirrors.

That would increase ice nova damage by 50%, which would cause coc or coa to proc 50% more often, which in the end gives the same comet damage increase. Its either 50% more comets or each comet doing 50% more damage depending on which prism you get - do you get the comet one or your main skill one? I would argue that its actually better in most cases to increase your main skill as opposed to comet for two reasons:

  1. If your main skill is doing enough damage to proc coc or coa often enough to carry you through whatever youre doing, a 50% boost to whatever that skill is would give you a big boost in that skill too in addition to comet making you much better at killing stuff without comet procs.

  2. 50% more comet procs would give more consistency spreading the damage out over smaller chunks rather that fewer and bigger booms. This is more true the more you are in endgame where speed is everything and you just want to "tag" each enemy for an insta kill as you run by them.

The only downside I see (with the limited knowledge that I have) is that its probably a bit more mana/hp intense to buff your main skill as opposed to buffing comet. When you upgrade a skill the mana cost increases although its slightly less than the damage increase it gets, for +3 skill points lets say 30% more mana cost for the sake of simplicity. That means that comparing the two, getting the main skill jewel youd have 30% cost increase for main skill and 50% cost increase for comet (due to comet proccing 50% more times) whereas the comet skill jewel would cause no cost increase to your main skill and only 30% cost increase to comet.

What do you think?

"That would increase ice nova damage by 50%, which would cause coc or coa to proc 50% more often" This is not true. when ur damage is high u will get full energy per cast and all the extra energy will be discarded.

also there's cost benefit. if u trigger comet 50% more often (let's ignore the energy waste) u will have 50% comet cost. also there's extra cost from ur main skill. But with +3 comet the extra cost is far less than 50%.

finally, for ppl who aimed to get +3 comet, their damage is likely far exceeding that any content would require so it basically becomes a number competition game in poe ninja for them

Meta skill.

getting a prism to roll a specific skill is rare as there are many many skills. Getting it to roll +3 is 3x rarer, since it can roll 1-3. Then the supply for it is low since demand is so high, since comet is so popular and meta. That causes the price to be so high. Mana costs are largely irrelevant at the highest level since CoC procs so often with good gear and due to needing no real mana management since all meta caster specs eventually have to swap to life and life leech to sustain high gem levels (either from Blood mage or covenant chest)

Brother, if you can handle max level comet mana cost, you are not the target of that jewel, not even close.

That jewel is for the most min-max build to squeeze out the biggest pp dmg, not just to get some extra dmg.

And this sheet does not have new Primal druid skills.

So you drop a prism from Arbiter of Ash (which is already RARE).

Than you have to win like 1 in 200 roll.

Than you have to win 1 in 3 roll.

And Comet is used in like 30-40% of the builds right now?

Demand vs offer. It sells at that price because people pay for it. It's in high demand because many players are playing it, and the offer is low because very limited numbers drop. Compare it to other +3 skills and watch how the prices tell you how popular a skill is: spark 9.5k D, fusillade 1.7k D, Ice nova 1.6k D vs Raging spirits 10D, Leap Slam 35D, Freezing salvo 1D.

Necause everybody its using comets

Its not needed generally, its a luxury item mainly for minmaxers. Mainly for builds in poe ninja who are playing for the highest comet DPS "leaderboards"

If it makes you feel any better, you dont actually need it.

We dont have in the game content that requires so much damage to reasonably justify +3 comet Prism. That diamond's purpose is pure flexing and truly min-maxing.

You are correct in that trigger skill damage effects your comet, but it doesn’t make it do more damage, it just increases the frequency of activation because the more damage you do with your trigger, the more energy per hit you will gain, but realistically speaking, people will be capped on that way before they buy a +3 prism. It’s not really that hard or expensive to get your spark, nova or whatever skill you want to use to a point where you’re getting big chunks of energy per hit, so why would you want a prism for something that isn’t comet? Pumping damage on your main skill is irrelevant other than to get energy up to a point, so invest in comet instead.

Hence why it’s so expensive, every single comet build wants it as an endgame chase because it’s one of the BIS jewels
