Build Advice for New Player (SSF)

As a new player, I am having trouble parsing between builds. I am not looking to traverse build creation quite yet, instead opting for SSF as a sufficient challenge.

I am currently transitioning from the "30 - Campaign" variation of this build, to the "Endgame" passive tree variation.

Unrelated, I have been listening to the Path 2 Exile podcast, and this build by MisoxShiru appears to be a nice alternative.

Level 67 Ritualist, completed the campaign and all sub-rewards.

Would any of you recommend either of these builds over the other for a new player, on ssf, on the current 0.4 league? And, any tips or short comings of either build would be great - i've heard armour is difficult to attain, compared to the performance of ES or evasion. The first build relies on armour.

No, I would not recommend any of these builds on ssf.  Also at level 67 you cant translate into "endgame" variant of the build as level 67 isnt endgame by far. Level 95 is endgame.  All of these builds do rely heavily on specific uniques and some very good rare items that you do not posses and some cant even drop at your level.

There are two ways to obtain them, either, you might get lucky and just drop some. Such as maligario gloves or tangletongue spear or hollowpalm shrine scepter. And then, you can't make the build complete by far, but you might try to use those uniques.  The second, reliable way to obtain them is to have endgame high performing build with 150 iir and juice endgame maps. At large amount of monster kills, such as half a milion, those items might eventually drop.

What you should do now is to level up thru white (easy maps), get as many levels as you can and reach T11 maps. Why t11 you ask? Because there drops items with ilvl75 which can roll a good mods. Find a decent blue spear and craft it to medicore rare spear using essences.

Also I would not recommend to play ritualist, but amazon. The reason is this, ritualist has bonuses from amulet and ring. You dont have any. And you wont have any for the longest period of time. Unless you got like 3 rings with 2x T1 damage mod and amazing amulet with 50 spirit, +3 to skills and crit mods, ritualist does nothing. In the meantime amazon would already have two good damage boosts. You can re-ascend later if you ever get those items.

If you wanted challenge and jumped ssf, you have no idea. 99,9% of builds you will find will fall flat on its face there. Progressing requires good knowledge of crafting and mechanics. Remember you can always transfer your ssf character to trade league. But I would check the price of given uniques first.

You should play a build requiring almost no gear to start, especially uniques. Unless its a minion build you will need to press a lot of buttons to compensate for lack of gear. You also need item rarity on gear in the early mid game. Sc trade builds this league tend to have very little rarity because of the temple but you do not yet have a temple.

For the ascendency, try to pick the ones giving direct character power. Eg ritualist is very bad to start bc you dont have rings, but the same goes for pathfinder, Varahsta. On the other hand, amazon, lich, stormweaver, invoker etc are good.

Btw a better way to start in ssf league is to build your character around some good uniques you drop early. Then you would have “finished” a gear slot, so there is less to craft. Eg. if you happen to drop a constricting command early, it is almost always the correct play to put it on immediately, and full spec into the surround passives. You also learn to create builds through this kind of adaptation and improvisation.
