I'll be commentating one of the PoE2 Races - Feedback Requested

Hi all, I'm CrimsonCasts, and I've been asked by GGG to co-host one of the upcoming Path of Exile 2 races alongside RaizQT, as a temporary substitute for the typical commentary anchor ZiggyD, who's busy during the second race of this cycle. Raiz and Ziggy have been hosting the races for a long time, this is my first time doing so.

For anyone meeting me for the first time, I'm an experienced PoE2 Racer, with a Tavakai Kill PB of 2h29m. You may know my voice from Angormus's Run at Awesome Games Done Quick or GuyThatDies 'Maps in 4Hours' Video. If you watched the GDQ run, please know the prep for that was aimed at a non-expert audience, so the style of commentary for the GGG Races can be much more technical and nuanced if that's what people prefer.

I'm going to be spending the next month prepping notes on as much as I can, but I'm curious for feedback: What sorts of things are you interested in hearing about during the races? What would make the races, as a viewer or participant, more enjoyable? I'd like to tailor my prep and commentary to things that would interest you.

I'm happy to get as nitty-gritty in explaining technical nuances of the optimizations top racers make, or to focus more on pointing out the techniques you can use in your league starts. Only a few classes will be vying for rank 1, and balance needs to be struck between focusing on the race for overall rank 1, and touring the builds and ideas for each class -- what would you like to see? Are there classes you really want to see more of, even if they're slower?

I can add in lore tidbits, or build hype around competitive narratives. I'm personally friends and collaborators with a few of the top racers, and would be happy to explain how they (we?) come up with and test new build ideas, or what practice looks like for us when the speedrun community isn't in the spotlight.

As a caveat, although I can pass on notes to GGG, my role is just to be a commentator and narrator for one of the races, and this is a one-time substitution for Ziggy, who will return to anchor the commentary desk with Raiz the following week. I hold absolutely no decision-making power over the race format or rewards.

Personally, my preference is just commentate the race.

I don't watch a race for lore.

I don't watch a race to hear manufactured narratives. If you're really keen for this, do it post race, even if that's on your personal channel.

So, just commentate - tell me what's going on. Especially great if you tell me things I can't see with my own eyes - i.e. use your knowledge as a speedyman to chat about the tricks or techniques or what the racer is likely thinking about and aiming for.

I want to know style differences between racers. Why did that guy skip something, what were they hoping to achieve, how risky is it.

Also, yes I love hearing about your average player league start tips we can take from them.

Lastly, what the meta is now. Why has it changed since the first race. Why has it changed since the last race. What are other speed runners looking for when watching these back. What are the crux areas of each act.

Cheers and have fun

I am not a frequent watcher but thoroughly enjoyed the speedrun commentary at gdq. The lore was very interesting having played so many hours of poe 2. I did enjoy at the end the speed commentary of is he going to make it or not, the hype vibe. More of that would be great

For the stuff that doesn't directly relate to the individual racers, I think people love to hear any tips and tricks that they can use themselves. Seems lots of layouts in PoE2 is about shapes and stuff that are hard to remember, so I don't think going too much into detail will help, but if there is anything easily rememberable people would likely want to hear. Maybe also if you can skip turning in quests and such.

I think in Act two when you fight the djinn there are usually some "post-it notes" on the wall leading to her and stuff like that. Or the wagon with the lute in Act 1.

having watched a few races the most unfun experience was when the commenters actually got so caught up in discussing something not related to the race that they actually missed who won the race and did not show him on screen.

Avoid that at all cost - keep focus on the race...

What I'd like to hear is:

  • which build the racer is going for
  • what skills and supports he uses at different points in the race, why those, pros, cons etc.
  • why he did what he did at a certain point
  • how he found a zone skip if there's multiple zone layouts for that zone, maybe also describe how to recognize the simpler zone layouts
  • general play by play

Wish these were more "endgame" focused races such as first arbiter kill or something. These campaign zooms can be fun but like the strats arent something youd do simulating a real character playthrough with all the "skips" like not ascending...

I really enjoy when casters discuss the evolving racing strategies & metas. So much of that discovery & evolution goes on outside of the official race events and hearing that side of the story during the event adds a lot of interesting context.

Also, layout reads are obviously super important, but I think the more tips and tricks centric insights are better left for YouTube videos and not the live casts.

Love your content and am sure you are going to crush it!

Im not sure how it could be implemented, but seeing some kind of overview of how much (useful) currency the top racers found so far could be interesting. Maybe we see huge differences in rng.

Hey! The GDQ run was a ton of fun, so thanks for that. Ive played PoE for a decade but that was my first exposure to PoE speedrunning, and i have been checking every couple weeks since that aired waiting for the next official race, so super excited to tune in for this!

As for feedback, personally I did find the lore/fun facts pretty interesting, but I understand if it doesn’t fit the vibe of the event. The other comments have already covered it but I’ll also echo that I’m interested in hearing how the meta has evolved, but also in some of the more technical details on the many decisions the runner is making (why this skill? why doing zone X before zone Y? behind on xp so need to kill more mobs, or ahead on xp so can just focus on magic packs, etc).

Can’t wait to see the unethical drops and silverfist one shots :)
