Can you only have 1 perfect essence on an item at a time?

This may be a silly question, but I've just used 6 perfect essences of battle/haste on a bow, and they removed each other each time. Is it possible to have both the suffixes from a perfect essence of haste and battle on the same item?

I have 3 suffixes on the bow, so I figured I'd have a 2/3 chance to have one of them replace another suffix, but instead they keep eating each other. Do I have really bad luck, or am I being silly and wasting essences on this thing?

You've had bad luck, but if you want to predictably get those 2 essence modifiers at a cost you can start with a bow with just 2 shitty prefixes and activate 2 omens of Sinistral Crystallization before using the Essences.

Or you could start with 1 unwanted prefix, 1 unwanted suffix, use the first essence with a Dextral Crystallization and the second essence with a Sinistral Crystallization.
