I went viral a few months ago lifting Benkei's spear in Japan and it was honestly kind of an awful experience. Don't get me wrong, the ACTUAL experience of being in Japan and having a crowd cheer for me was incredible - thousands of people with no profile picture calling me "fat" and "weak" despite me lifting ~100kg with one arm was not. Even as an actor, having a 50 million-ish viewed video (if you add up all the AI channels that reposted it) hasn't really helped in casting. Ultimately, it was mostly just a lot of humiliation and energy drain. And that was for doing something genuinely cool (successfully completing a strength challenge in a Kyoto temple). I can't imagine how difficult it is to go viral for something truly shameful, like falling down a flight of stairs or something.
On the other hand, I've met some cool people and creators on social media, including booking quite a few creative jobs through networking on here and other places. It's a real mixed bag and a necessary evil if you're a modern creative.
