Someone sent a message, but the message is no longer there? Doesn’t show that a message was unsent

Got a few messages from a friend. I opened them and replied to them about an hour later, then those messages from the friend were no longer able to be seen. The message thread does not say that they were unsent like it typically does.

Any idea how/why this happened?
