the concept isn't new, Highlight, Yik Yak, Foursquare all tried versions of this. the ones that survived (Nextdoor, to some extent) did so because the use case had genuine pull beyond "meet strangers nearby." the real problem with Wander's pitch is that it assumes people want to meet strangers IRL. most don't. the "coffee with someone nearby" fantasy sounds nice but converts poorly. people use apps to avoid awkward real-life interactions, not to engineer more of them. what actually works in location-based social is utility first, serendipity second.
