Why do Reels/TikTok keep people scrolling even when most of the content isn’t that good?
Been thinking about this from more of a social media / platform design angle.
A lot of the time people stay on Reels or TikTok way longer than they planned to, even though if you’re being honest, most of the clips in any session probably aren’t that memorable.
That’s the part I find interesting.
It doesn’t really feel like people are staying because every video is amazing. It feels more like there’s always this sense that the next one might be the one that’s actually insane, funny, useful, whatever.
Almost like the average content quality matters less than the feeling that something better is always one swipe away.
Curious what people here think is actually doing the heavy lifting.
Is it mostly:
- habit
- boredom
- feed personalization
- randomness
- that “next clip might be better” feeling
- something else
And from a platform/user-experience standpoint, what would you change without making it less entertaining?
