Tik Tok is basically instagram reels now

I remember, before tik tok was sold to the US, that the algorithm was A LOT more sophisticated compared to now.

I remember the search and recommended videos were WAY more accurate, now the hashtags are the most unrelated, there is WAY more violent and graphic videos, stolen videos reposted like crazy. The videos now being pushed out on the for you page are basically brain rot. I think this is clear proof that American owned apps are MEANT to rot our brains, nothing important is pushed out anymore, I have to search for it if I want to see it.

The good thing is Tik tok’s search is still a HELL of a lot better than instagram and facebook will ever be, so that is a plus, and the app still runs smoother, its the algorithm that has clearly downgraded that is the most telling part that America owns the app now. Now anyone can get in, and little to no regulations or restrictions, and trash gets pushed out. Very sad.

It’s awful. I just stick with my friends pages because fyp is all ads, verticals and old movie and tv show clips.

Sure it's bad but before US buying, before Ai, tiktok has always been low effort slop of people dancing randomly to bad music, thirst trapping, spam, etc. I see no point in romanticizing Tiktok in any form.

YouTube generally is the platform for higher quality, long format 4k+ content.

Even just the content because the amount of times I see a tribute video for the sandy hook victims I see comments from TTC making fun of them or AI videos of Adam after the switch is disgustingly.

People keep blaming the sale but the app has been like this since 2025. AI slop has been on there since 2025. The app feeling like IG Reels 2.0 is because the app is simply too mainstream now. EVERYONE is on it. The crowd who swore to never download TT 6 years ago because “it’s a girly dance app” and instead stayed on Instagram have now downloaded TT and brought their humor with them. It’s simply Instagram levels of mainstream. TikTok was thriving when it wasn’t as huge as it was today

I only watch “following” now

I think Battles was the start of the end. People that would do GRWM and talk to their chat just talk between battles. TT will randomly relive creators from accounts and they no longer post. The algorithm did change after the US took over. Not as diverse.

I am in the UK so initially wasn't affected by it, but for the last 10 days I get shown blocks of videos with not a single comment on it, mostly completely outside of my interest and since Tuesday Lego Videos made in Iran have disappeared and have been replaced with Lego Videos made elsewhere and about different issues

Interestingly, ByteDance still owns the app, but you're right that the 'vibe' shifted once it became a global titan. It feels like they traded a 'smart' algorithm for one that strictly prioritizes engagement (aka brain rot) because that's what makes the most money. Once an app goes mainstream, it stops being a discovery tool and starts being a dopamine slot machine.
