Wouldn't the literal idiom be him eating it and it remaining there like a magic self replenishing cake?
Yall probably already know this but I learned the other day that the phrase was originally “you can’t have Kate and Edith too” and over the years it got misheard and transformed into “you can’t have your cake and eat it too”. It’s supposed to mean sometimes you aren’t able to have two good outcomes in a situation.
