First thing I'd do is separate the camera from the prompter. Instead, use the iPhone's rear camera for better video quality, then put the script on another device.
If you're on a tight budget and can't get a real teleprompter yet, you can place an iPad or laptop as close to the lens as possible and keep the text large enough to read comfortably.
However, if this is for professional content, buying a basic beam-splitter teleprompter rig is probably worth it, especially if you're going to be doing this regularly.
What kind of device does the talent have? Are they able to get a newer device or borrow someone who has the iPhone 17?
The front-facing camera on that is exponentially better. There is at least one app that I know about that supports recording open gate from the front sensor so you can reframe in post too.
