Yeah honestly I think social media shifted from:
“communities with content”
to
“content ecosystems with audiences.”
Older platforms felt more identity/community driven.
People stayed in smaller spaces longer, recognized usernames, built inside jokes, forums had culture, niche communities actually felt niche.
Now most platforms optimize for:
maximum consumption.
So feeds became less:
“people I know / communities I’m part of”
and more:
“infinite algorithmic entertainment.”
And once monetization got heavier, behavior changed too.
A lot of people stopped posting to connect and started posting to:
- grow
- monetize
- optimize
- perform
- build personal brands
which subtly changes the atmosphere of everything.
I also think algorithmic feeds weakened community memory.
Back then you intentionally visited spaces.
Now content just gets injected at you constantly from everywhere.
And honestly bots/AI/spam made people trust online interaction less in general.
The internet feels bigger than ever but weirdly less personal at the same time.
