What happened to just seeing what your mates are up to on instagram

Why has no one built a social media app that just shows you your mates?

I lived abroad for years and Instagram was genuinely brilliant for it. Showing family and friends back home what I was up to, staying connected, feeling less far away. That's what it was built for.

Years later as it evolved it just became an attention seeking machine, so I've deactivated it.

No for you page, no suggested posts, no randoms. Just the people you actually follow, in order.

Would anyone actually use something like this or have we all just accepted the algorithm now?

Feel like the big players are so far ahead, there’s no room for others. Trying to move to a more analog style of life but recognising technology is inescapable, hence this thought coming to mind

I so agree I think those of us on early version of instagram would love to return to the old version and I agree I would be OK with a couple ads here and there I just want to only see those people I choose to follow! Now its like half the posts are suggested or ads. The problem is I think you would need substantial financial backing to try and convert people to another social media app and the giants in the game would do everything in their power to stop that and shut it down. But if I had the right connections and the money to push people onto the new app I would start an old style Instagram.

I have also recently discovered that if you click on the word Instagram at the top of your feed you can go to "following" and that returns your feed to a chronological feed of just those you follow but you can't set that as the default and everytime you go back on Instagram you have to manually put yourself on that feed. I also think that because of the way the app has become most of my friends don't really post about their life anymore which is a shame in itself.

Without massive advertising or promo dollars, how would it survive? User pays? Owner pays? Subscription model? Something else?

That’s why everything like IG is fucked - marketing dollars and brands infected everything (not just clear adverts - those #ad influencer posts and brands pretending to be people by making their adverts UGC-style)

So eyeballs is the metric the platforms charge for, and forcing this shit onto everyone instead of letting them see their friends or following content, is how they get them.

Don’t get me wrong - I’d love a platform that did that. But it’s the money, and somebody always has to pay.

I think for Instagram, Stories is the place for this right now

and any new social media would have no place in this. Even social media built on algorithms can't compete with these big companies. How do the small ones with only sharing for family and friends and no clear business plan work? I don't think this is realistic in this time we have. It would be nice, yes, but it's not how the real world works.

This is how most social platforms started. You only saw posts from your connects and you saw them in real time, and sequence. Search was better too for specific info. Algos ruined everything.

I think a lot of people would say they want this, and honestly I include myself in that group. The original appeal of social media was keeping up with people you actually knew, not consuming an endless stream of content from strangers.

The problem is that chronological feeds and friend-only networks are great for connection but terrible for engagement metrics. The algorithms weren't added because users asked for them, they were added because they keep people scrolling longer. That's why almost every platform eventually drifts in that direction.

That said, I do think there's room for smaller products focused on close relationships. The challenge isn't convincing people they want it, it's convincing them to post there when all of their friends are still on Instagram. The network effect is the real moat, not the technology. If someone cracks that problem, I'd happily use it.

The problem isn't that nobody wants a friends-only feed. It's that the algorithms are ridiculously good at exploiting curiosity and boredom. People say they want to see their mates, then spend 45 minutes watching a guy pressure-wash a driveway in another country.

Ironically, the closest thing to what you're describing is probably group chats. Social media optimized for connection tends to become messaging. Social media optimized for attention becomes... well, Instagram. 😑

Any people that runs 100 to 10k followers pages (any social media)?

Hey all, I own a business that involves many clients that promote their product, art or website with TikTok (also Instagram, Youtube and Facebook). I want to offer them a way to post their content, or to get content created and posted for them on existing TikTok pages. Basically you got pages in a specific theme (sport, anime, cinema, culture, memes...) and you rent it for a specific period of time. You get paid every month, and all you have to do is basically connecting the account once to our system. You can opt-out anytime you want, you keep the full ownership of the account. That's basically a way to monetize your pages passively. For now I'm doing it myself with my own pages (3 tiktok pages with 500 to 3k followers, and 1 6k subscribers Youtube channel), I made around $800 renting these for less than a month.
