My parents always just said go outside.

Too hot? Go outside.

Too cold? Go outside.

No food in the house? Go outside.

Str8 up still do this when it's cold in the kitchen. Let it hit 275 and shut ER off open the door and your boys are toasty warm until the coffee is ready

I grew up middle-class. Parents were both teachers. In the neighborhood adjacent to us there was a parsonage (church owned home) where a pastor and family lived. He adopted all his kids and some had special needs. One winter day my friends and I stopped to see who could play and they opened the door and rushed us inside because the heat was escaping. They had plastic sheets hanging up to close off certain rooms and the oven open to heat the house because the furnace broke and the church wouldn’t fix it.

I just remember being sad for them and wondering if they were poor.

When I first moved into my San Francisco studio apartment over a decade ago, we didn’t have control over the heat. It was one of those metal heater things the landlord could only turn on. I was like 21 and didn’t know better so I used to turn my oven on to heat my apartment. Apparently that wasn’t safe lmao my bad it was coldddd
