Do social media apps still have room for new ideas?

I’ve been building a social media app as a personal project for about a year, and have been loving it, but recently when I was thinking about when I’m finally finished (because I’m so close) it thought to myself, “huh are social media apps like a saturated kind of app?”.

Obviously there are the big names like Instagram, TikTok, twitter, but i never thought about if there were others so I scrolled through the AppStore and realized there’s like tumblr VSCO, even Reddit(idk what i thought Reddit was, but i didn’t think it was considered social media).

Part of me thinks there’s always room for a new idea, but another part of me wonders if people are so locked into their current apps that they don’t really look elsewhere anymore.

For context, the app I’m building is a gamified social app built around two follower types: Haters and Motivators. When you make a post, you choose whether to post it to your Haters or your Motivators. Users can follow you as either type, and there are separate feeds for each. Haters can troll, criticize, doubt, or joke around, while Motivators can encourage, support, give advice, and celebrate wins.

The app also has account leveling, titles, badges, leaderboards, and profile customization tied to how people interact with content.

Does that sound like something that could carve out its own niche, or does the social media space feel too crowded for new platforms to gain traction these days?

And if you were forced to pick one, would you join as a Hater or a Motivator?

New social apps can absolutely still win.

The hard part isn’t building something different. It’s distribution and network effects.

I’d focus on proving that people keep coming back because of the Hater/Motivator mechanic. If that works, you might have something interesting.

I don't think social media is saturated with ideas, just with copies of the same idea. Your Haters vs Motivators concept is different enough to spark curiosity, especially if the interactions stay fun and don't become toxic. Personally, I'd probably join as a Motivator, but I'd be interested to see how both sides shape the community. I've also seen newer community-focused like OutrighTalk trying to create their own niche, which shows there's still room for fresh approaches when they offer a unique experience.

I used only Replit to build Cinderreels.com a full fledged social media web app where anything you post vanishes at midnight in your timezone. You can post images, videos, texts and links. You can DM, set up public, private and hidden groups. It even has Cinder AIs (future humans) with different personalities that interact with your posts. One of them will roast you or anyone if you hashtag him.

I have had the idea for over 10 years and it was inspired by Cinderella having to rush out of the ball at midnight. Vibe coding websites like Replit has enabled me to bring my idea to life for less than the cost of a decent mobile phone.

The cost to build it then would have been unthinkable and probably around $100k. In June 2025, I hired a programming company on one of the Freelance websites to build the prototype for me. I lost the will to live after seeing what they built after 6 months and at $7,500. It was clunky and unusable.

With Replit, it has taken me only two months in my spare time to build it and it is 1,000x better than what the human programmers built and with more features.

I think people overestimate how much a platform needs to be "new." Instagram wasn't the first photo app. TikTok wasn't the first short form video app. Reddit wasn't the first forum. Most successful platforms win because they do something better, simpler, or for a more specific audience soo If you've been building it for a year and people genuinely enjoy using it, I'd pay more attention to that than whether the market looks crowded.

Any people that runs 100 to 10k followers pages (any social media)?

Hey all, I own a business that involves many clients that promote their product, art or website with TikTok (also Instagram, Youtube and Facebook). I want to offer them a way to post their content, or to get content created and posted for them on existing TikTok pages. Basically you got pages in a specific theme (sport, anime, cinema, culture, memes...) and you rent it for a specific period of time. You get paid every month, and all you have to do is basically connecting the account once to our system. You can opt-out anytime you want, you keep the full ownership of the account. That's basically a way to monetize your pages passively. For now I'm doing it myself with my own pages (3 tiktok pages with 500 to 3k followers, and 1 6k subscribers Youtube channel), I made around $800 renting these for less than a month. Everything dying at 300 views for so long before I finally caught the problem

I've been absolutely obsessed with short form content for the last two years. Like people have staged actual interventions about my health level of obsessed. I'm talking 11-14 hour days breaking down what separates successful videos from failures, experimenting with different hook variations, rewriting scripts until my brain hurts, testing every editing approach I could possibly get my hands on. Why this level of obsession? Because I'm absolutely certain short form video is the backbone of everything right now. Growing followers, selling anything, generating opportunities, creating brands from nothing. Every part of it depends on whether you can hold someone's attention for 30 seconds. But here's what nearly made me quit entirely: despite the constant daily grind, nothing was hitting. I'd pour 7-8 hours into crafting one video only to watch it crash at 300 views. Tried every tactic from every person claiming to have figured it out. Bought their courses. Applied their "proven" methods. Still going nowhere.
