I had a discussion with a white gentleman of a specific age and his wife that had views like that. Illegals this and immigrants that. I asked, hypothetically, what if the shoe was on the other foot. What if your family was in danger and the only way to save them was to cross the border, illegal or otherwise? Would you not go to any lengths to protect them? His only answer was, “Well that’s different.” No, sir, it’s not.

I told him my family’s story of escaping Vietnam during the war. Of how when they came to this country they were given the exact same rhetoric. They’re all criminals. They’re here to take work from honest Americans. They’re all dirty and filthy dog eaters. Weirdly, this guy said that’s not true, he personally knows some Vietnamese people and they’re good people. But he absolutely refuses to try to get to know the backgrounds of hispanic or latin immigrants with similar stories.

These people are strange.

They point to the fallacy that "crossing borders illegally is a crime, therefore that mother is a criminal, therefore [insert the worst possible stereotype of criminals]". They want you to think that a crime is a crime, so there's no difference between crossing that river and stabbing an innocent woman, so that mother could very well go and stab an innocent woman.
