It's a song Stromae wrote about his own dad, who died in Rwanda during the genocide, and how he's missing his presence in his life now he built a new life in Belgium, grewing up without him.

All this just to say everytime I hear non French speakers singing "Papaoutai", où t'es ? Papaoutai, où t'es ?", it's clear to me that they don't understand what they sing, as it's a very sad song in the end and they seem so happy when they sing it.

That's the genius of Stromae (Maestro in slang, called verlan), his lyrics contains tons of sadness when the rythm is bringing so much joy...
