If you have a company and you are looking for social media to promote it, what you need to look for is where your buyer persona is. You need to have presence where your potential customers are.

Something that you can do is create content and repurpose it in several channels. That way it can feel less exhausting.

Of course it's more effective to have a strategy tailored for each place, but as you feel this exhausting and probably you don't have a budget for delegation, best you can do is to repurpose content.

If Instagram/TikTok/LinkedIn feel draining, I’d separate “community” from “distribution.” They don’t have to be the same place.

For a small business, I’d think in layers:

• Home base: somewhere you actually enjoy showing up, like Substack, a simple newsletter, or a small community space.
• Discovery: one or two places where new people can still find you without you living there all day.
• Relationship: a way for the right people to keep hearing from you once they’ve found you.

Substack can work well if your business has a point of view, useful stories, local expertise, behind-the-scenes notes, or recommendations people would want even when they aren’t ready to buy. Reddit can also be good if you’re genuinely participating in niche communities instead of “promoting.” Discord/Circle/Mighty-style communities can work, but they’re harder because you have to create the activity yourself.

I wouldn’t force yourself into creator mode on platforms you already resent. Pick the format you can sustain for a year, then use the noisier platforms only as lightweight distribution when you have something worth sharing.

Substack is a great call. The comments there actually feel like conversations.

For small business visibility, Reddit niche subs and Geneva are worth exploring. Low noise, real people. LinkedIn works too if you post like a human. The icky feeling is usually about how people use it, not the platform itself.

If you mean platforms that favor real connection over growth hacks, try federated networks like Mastodon or Lemmy, smaller invite-only Discord or Slack groups, niche forums, and newer options like Bluesky?

I get what you mean. Instagram can feel exhausting because even when you’re trying to be normal, the whole app pushes you into “content strategy mode.”

I’d separate two things: community and visibility.

For community, I’d look at Substack Notes, niche Discords, Reddit communities, Bluesky, Geneva, Circle communities, and even smaller paid/private communities around your industry. Those usually feel more human because people are there for conversations, not just reach.

For visibility, it gets trickier. The more “authentic” platforms are usually slower for growth. But that’s not always a bad thing, especially if you’re building a small business. A warm audience of 500 people can be more useful than 20k random Instagram followers.

Substack is a good place to keep building if writing feels natural to you. I’d probably use it as the home base, then pick 1 lighter discovery channel around it. Maybe Reddit if your audience is community/question based, Pinterest if your business is visual, Bluesky if you like casual conversation, or YouTube if you can make deeper evergreen content.

I wouldn’t force Instagram if you already feel drained by it. You can build visibility without becoming an “Instagram creator,” but it will probably be slower and more relationship-driven.
