Crazy to think Ho Chi Minh would often express admiration for American ideals of independence and self-determination. He even quoted the United States Declaration of Independence when proclaiming Vietnamese independence in 1945.

Ho initially hoped the United States would support Vietnam’s freedom from French colonial rule. However, as the Cold War intensified, the U.S. backed France.

And so began the meat grinder that would take the lives of millions all in the name of actual freedom and fighting against oppression, the colonists, and then the Americans.

For Ho, I imagine the fight with the United States was not only necessary for freedom and independence, but also deeply personal in some ways at that point.

I work with a lot of Vietnamese student and I would just like to shout out how incredibly determined and hard working Vietnamese people are, and how hard they have worked to rebuild and overcome despite the way their country was ravaged.

Since the end of the Vietnam War, Vietnam has achieved one of the most remarkable development success stories in the world. Life expectancy has risen a lot, poverty has fallen from affecting much of the population to a small minority, and access to healthcare has expanded a lot. Vietnam has also made major investments in education, now with high literacy rates and strong student performance on pisa, especially relative to investment. It's amazing the effect to transform quality of life within a single generation.

Vietnamese people today are even noticeably taller than their parents and grandparents.... height among young adults has increased by roughly 5–10 centimeters (2–4 inches) over the past two generations.

They started with nothing and they spun it into everything.

This is nothing compared to what they did in My Lai. They ran a train on those villagers.
