How to avoid a male following on your socials as a woman

I've deleted alot of my accounts, that had good engagement, because the engagement was coming from an 80% male audience. Middle aged men in my comments, likes dms. So I have very specific questions since I've experienced this so many times and I have a very rational fear of creepy men.

  1. In the early stages of social media influencing, I'm talking 3 weeks/ 1 month into the account, is it inevitable to have male 'bot-looking' accounts interacting with your account?

  2. Female Influencers that have a female following, did they always attract a woman based audience? I just saw a post on this subreddit that had the same frustration as me, they make girly content but attract a male audience.

  3. MOST IMPORTANTLY, Lets say its inevitable that you start off with a male following, how do I get over the ick and fear of male engagement? Do I even keep going?

I know this might sound a little silly, but unless your content is specifically targeted toward women—such as makeup or similar topics—it's likely that men will watch it as well. If your goal is to reduce the number of male viewers, one thing you could do is place less emphasis on your appearance. If you're very attractive, that doesn't mean making yourself look unattractive, but perhaps presenting yourself in a more neutral way. You could also avoid wearing clothing that reveals a lot of skin and avoid featuring yourself prominently in the thumbnail or within the first few seconds of the reel. Many viewers make quick decisions about whether to keep watching, so focusing the opening on the content itself rather than your appearance may help attract an audience that is interested in the topic rather than the creator.

Depends on the kind of content you are making. I feel like a lot of straight men probably won't consume makeup related videos, as an example.

But it's hard to say. Like it's kind of inescapable.

I don’t have an issue with it. I get an occasional bot DM here and there, but my audience is largely female. I do it is almost entirely about what you post, though. Mine are all talking head videos, but I’m old and fat and talk about cats lol

I've noticed some large gender ratio swings depending on the platform. Facebook, Insta, and TikTok each are used more by women (According to Pew, 2025 Social Media report), but Meta platforms tend to recommend men a lot of content made by women, whether they want it or not (the irony is astounding). Among the 'smaller' platforms, Tumblr or Pinterest might be a decent try, depending on your business

I've also seen some social/support groups move to invite only or private, which seems to work well, but doesn't make you very findable, but if you can use a public profile to point to a less exposed platform, you might be able to focus your audience better

My daughter has about 200K followers between TikTok and Insta and makes a decent living from her content.

Almost all of her followers are women. Her male followers are the partners of her female followers.

Her content is 100% female hobby focused and she doesn’t post anything that can be remotely perceived as sexual by some imaginative, sex-obsessed creep. She’s very attractive but she’s been able to avoid male attention with her current content. She learned that the hard way from the accounts she had when she was in her teens.

It’s unfortunate that women have to think about and strategize on how to avoid attention from creepy men. But that’s the reality we live in.

Any people that runs 100 to 10k followers pages (any social media)?

Hey all, I own a business that involves many clients that promote their product, art or website with TikTok (also Instagram, Youtube and Facebook). I want to offer them a way to post their content, or to get content created and posted for them on existing TikTok pages. Basically you got pages in a specific theme (sport, anime, cinema, culture, memes...) and you rent it for a specific period of time. You get paid every month, and all you have to do is basically connecting the account once to our system. You can opt-out anytime you want, you keep the full ownership of the account. That's basically a way to monetize your pages passively.
